Located off Peconic Bay on eastern Long Island, this locale was home to Native Americans who thrived on the abundant resources available. Shown with the tide out and the mud flats exposed, this scene is little changed from historic times.

The focal point of the Hallockville Farm Restoration, Miss Ella Hallock's house is the original family homestead. The back porch entry includes the oldest section of the house, root cellar and feeling of sanctuary and comfort with the weathered shingles and paving stones.

Named for a local hollow where travelers could "bait" (feed) their horses during colonial times, this scene shows early morning light filtering through the farm lot mists along Sound Avenue - one of the area's first roads.

Typical of the northern oyster dredger, Modesty was built to harvest scallops and oysters from Peconic Bay and surrounding waters. Shown here under way with dredges overboard, she would make a run, head into the wind, pull the dredges, empty the harvest and repeat the tack until the hold was full…if luck was with them on that day.

The head of the Peconic River, Eastern Long Island, 1890 in moonlight. Riverhead, the small farming town also had a minor presence as an inland port with coasting schooners delivering goods to its handful of mills.

Grace Bailey was built in Patchogue, Long Island in 1882 for the lumber trade, carrying cargo to her owner's lumber yard for years. she now sails in the windjammer trade out of Camden, Maine having been fully restored in 1990. Shown here under her original rig as she may have appeared in coastal waters on the eastern seaboard.
